Q&A With Toni About His Frame and Setup:

You've just set up your new signature BSD frame, how does it feel to see your name on a frame?
It’s been a pretty surreal to be honest, every time I go ride and I look down I still can’t believe it haha. It feels like I’ve got a new unlocked power now when I’m riding, I don’t know how else to to say it. I just feel super good and dialled, like I can hop higher almost, but maybe that’s cause I’ve just got it and am super excited to ride everyday haha. Also it’s really cool to have a physical representation of an achievement, I feel like as street riders our proudest accomplishments are all video parts and tricks we’ve done in those videos, but to have something to look at and hold in my hands is a really sick feeling and a bit different from other things I would say are accomplishments.

How is the frame feeling?
So good, it’s exactly how imagined I wanted my frame to feel! From the frames I rode in the past I knew I just wanted a little more of a certain feeling. For example the lock in point on nose mannys and hang fives, and now having it exactly how I imagined and wanted is super cool. It’s maybe just in my head but I feel like my riding has improved even in just the last few weeks from having the personalised geometry.

You've previously rode the Grime, ALVX and Jonesin' frames. What led to your decisions on choosing the geometry for your frame?
I loved all their frames for different reasons and I would go back and forth so much depending on what was in my head at the time. I’m really anal about the way my bike feels and I’m always changing sizes and little bits, I can never decide between 20.8" and 21" top tubes , or the ALVX back end or the Jonesin' headtube angle. I know what I liked from each and how I wanted other parts of the frame to feel and how I want to feel when I’m doing certain tricks. My frame actually doesn’t have a dimension that is the same as any of the three I rode before, you’ll notice it’s all different by maybe 0.1 or 0.2, that’s just what I felt the best size for my style and height is, even the ratio of my bars and top tube I are linked to my legs and upper body. It all sounds really nerdy but it helps me ride, and sleep better at night haha.

Get Tweeked!
Get Tweeked!

Tell us about that sick colourway, where did that idea come from!
So basically it comes from my favourite song of all time, which is 'Cherry-coloured Funk' by the Cocteau Twins. The song is actually used in the outro of my BSD 'Motion Picture' video part which is my favourite part that I’ve put out so far. After Grant told me he wanted to give me a frame he said go away for a few days and think about the geo and colours, you get two. Straight away I knew I would do black because it’s just classic and always looks good. Then I really couldn’t decide on a colour but knew I had to because Grant needed to mock up some drawings pretty soon. Then I was in my van one day thinking about what I wanted and the song came on and instantly I knew that was it! Couldn’t believe I hadn’t thought of it before but it just made so much sense. And there you go, cherry colored funk is now the main colour of the new frame and honestly it’s the sickest looking colour I think I’ve ever had.

What's the inspiration for your frames name?
Another story time for you! It's a bit weird but I’ve always had like this little tick, it’s not like Tourette’s syndrome but it’s definitely noticeable if you know me well. I was really struggling to come up with a name for a frame, and Tam Roulston always would say when my ticks were going off a bit, “mate stop tweaking bro” and one night out I was saying about not knowing what I want to call the frame and we were going back and forth and Tam said “mate you’re tweaking out, why don’t you just call it the TWEEKER”. Instantly we both couldn’t stop laughing and I thought yeah that would be so funny. And when I told Grant he thought it was a class idea. It also ties in with me tweaking the geometry of the other frames and also my riding style is fast and twitchy, so it kind of all just tied together and worked. So yeah I give you the TWEEKER...

You've also been testing out a new stem. What's the story there?
All the BSD stems are super good looking and I’ve been riding the same front load stem for the last 3 or 4 years. The stems are more classic geometry to suit any rider who wants to ride one, which is super cool. However I suggested to Grant about making a more specialised stem with a shorter reach for making barspins and nose manuals more responsive. Grant was pretty down to make one and when the process started he told me it should be my signature stem because it was my idea and I wanted to ride it. I was so blown away by the concept of having my first signature part, I couldn’t believe it. I’ve been riding the prototype for about 2 months and it feels awesome. Perfect for sweet and faster barspins.

The new Lo Pro grips are also dropping next month. You've been trying out a set, how do they feel?
Yeah I’m really into the grips, I’ve only been riding them for about 2 weeks but they’re really comfy and the little flange is really nice for where the end of the grip meets the bar end, no more chafed hands!

What other parts are a must have on your setup?
For me the main ones that come to mind are the Jonesin' forks and ALVX bars in 9.5". Right now those two combined with the head angle of my frame and the shorter stem has transformed the whole feeling of the front end into a barspinning machine and also hangfives and nozzers feel immaculate.

You are back riding the Westcoaster hub, why does that hub suit you?
The reason I always go back to the Westcoaster is because honestly it just suits my riding the best. I’ve tried the Revolution numerous times and I don’t know why but I seem to make it engage. I think it has something to do with how I move my feet landing certain tricks because none of the other team riders have this problem. Alex, Gaspar and Guy all swear by it. But for me the Westcoaster just feels more forgiving as it has the slack and I can better judge where my cranks are at. It’s really important when doing whips and landing backwards for me, I want to feel 100% confident when I’m trying those tricks.

You have also run the 27 tooth version of the Guard sprocket since it came out. What makes that gearing the choice for you?
I’ve really been enjoying the 27 tooth, it feels basically the same as a 28 but with a tad more wiggle room for not catching on certain grinds, mainly switch crooks.

Any last words?
Just want to say a massive thanks to BSD for these amazing opportunities I’m getting and life I’m living, it’s genuinely a dream come true to say the least! And thanks to anyone else who supports me or has ever supported me, especially my Mum and Dad. And thanks to Tam and Izzy for letting me live in their house this summer, haha.
